The ODINAFRICA has its
inception during the third session of the IOCINCWIO
meeting in 1992. The members stressed the need to:
strengthen the national data management
capacities
and;
to develop a regional data and information network.
Consequently a proposal was
submitted for the development of the ODINEA as part of
the first phase of the ODINEAFRICA project and was
funded by the Governement of Flanders. This was
implemented from 1998 to 2000. The second phase of the
project
ODINAFRICA
II considers the Pan
African region. The countries participation in
ODINEAFRICA I includes, the Seychelles, Mauritius,
Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania and South
Africa.
The result of the
ODINAFRICA I are operational Oceanographic Data
Centres in the above mentioned countries, an operational
regional data dissemination data centre, trained data
managers and metadata databases for the IOCINCWIO region.
The Seychelles Oceanographic and Coastal Data centre is a
result of the Project.
